Indoor Plant Swapping

The Wall Street Journal just published and article titled: "Plant Swaps: the Cheap Way to Score Rare Houseplants" that pointed out how popular indoor plants are becoming. The article is behind a pay wall, so you will only be able to read the first part if you do not have access.  It is a great article about people meeting to trade cuttings and plants to add to their indoor plant collections.

The good news is we have our own plant swapping opportunity right here in Oakland called The Plant Exchange: They have regular events where you can buy and trade indoor and outdoor plants and potting materials.  Everything Grows regularly donates extra plants to this non-profit organization, so you might end up with a plant from our warehouse.

Crotons are very colorful plants that require good lighting to maintain their color.  If they do not get good light, the leaves will turn mostly green.

DIY Vertical Garden

Designed as part of the Ikea Lab idea development program, the Growroom is an open source vertical garden. It is designed specifically to be effective in small urban spaces. The Sphere-shaped structure’s design allows light and water to reach every level of the garden while still providing shade and shelter for visitors within.
This can help communities to become more agriculturally self-sustainable. In other countries such as the Netherlands a leading supermarket has created an in store herb garden, so that customers can pick their own herbs.

As a part of the Growrooms goal of increasing local food sustainability, local makers only need the basic tools to construct the garden. The entire structure is made from plywood, a material that is fairly easily accessed.

Here is the link to the complete article on how to build your own grow room:

Steps to install your own DIY Vertical Garden

Everything Grows does not construct Growrooms but this was something that we wanted to post for an eco friendly structure that can be a helpful DIY. Below is a photo of an indoor green wall that Everything Grows provides.

Indoor Plants From Hawaii

Everything Grows provides the best available Hawaiian grown Dracaenas.  Read on to learn why they are the best.
Lush Dracaena Lisa from Hawaii

Dracaena growers in Hawaii start with their own local stock fields. The cane is topped in the field and allowed to sprout before being cut into the appropriate lengths. The topped cane is fresh and healthy and produces strong roots once potted.  The resulting specimens are vigorous, full and rich with color and aesthetic balance.

Dracaena cane field in Hawaii

In contrast, California and Florida Dracaena growers use imported bare cane from Costa Rica and the Caribbean. This cane must use its stored food reserves for the lengthy shipping process, as well as for the rooting and sprouting process. The result is that the cane sprouting is inconsistent, and the finished plant often looks thin and unbalanced.

For the growing medium, Hawaiian growers use cinder mixes made from various ratios of Canadian peat moss and volcanic cinder. The cinder is inert, decomposes very slowly, and has unique aeration and water holding properties. It is this quality of soil aeration that makes it possible for root systems to remain aerated and healthy even in low light conditions existing in many interior spaces.

Most Dracaena growers on the mainland use soil mixes comprised of wood by-products, bark, sawdust and other fillers, which decompose quickly, thereby greatly reducing soil aeration and thus plant quality and longevity.

Finally, the Hawaiian Dracaenas that Everything Grows uses are acclimated to lower light conditions over time. This prepares the Dracaenas for the artificial lighting conditions of the typical interior environment and ensures a long lasting, lush and beautiful plant in our customer's spaces.

Rhapis Palm Growth Cycle

Rhapis Palms are one of the more exotic and beautiful plants that we place indoors.  They need good light, and a lot of water and nutrients to thrive.  They are one of more expensive plants to place, in part because they take so long to grow.  A 5 foot tall Rhapis palm takes about 5 years to grow.

Below is the growth cycle of the Rhapis Palm
The production of Rhapis begins with seeds that once germinated are grown for the first year under partial shade:

The plants are then brought outside to develop further:

After a year of being outside in full sun, the plants are transplanted into 2 gallon grow pots and brought back into the greenhouse to finish under partial shade:

Once the plants reach a certain height and density, they are sold as a 2 gallon Rhapis or potted into a 5 gallon grow pot to grow on further:

Again, once the plants reach a certain height and density, they are sold as 5 gallon Rhapis or potted up to 7 gallon and grown on. This process of growing on continues from 7gal to 10gal to 15gal to 20gal. Eventually, you arrive a beauties like these:

Rhapis are fairly slow growing plants. The rule of thumb is that Rhapis grow about 1 ft per year, which I why they are one of the more expensive plants in the industry. However, their flexibility and longevity make them worth the wait.

Orchid Care

The phalaenopsis orchid is by far the most popular indoor orchid and for good reason, they are beautiful, and the hold up well in indoor environments. Read on below to learn proper care for the phalaenopsis orchid.

Light:
  • Phalaenopsis orchids can survive in low light to moderate light situations. However, if exposed to direct sunlight, the leaves will suffer sunburn and become unsightly with black splotches.
  • Phalaenopsis do best in an east or (shaded) west facing window, but make sure that the plant is at least about 3 feet away from the glass.
  • If the foliage on the plant is dark green and limp, it is an indication the plant needs more light. Yellowish leaves indicate the plant is getting too much light. Ideally, the foliage should be a bright olive green.
Temperature:
  • Ideally, Phalaenopsis prefer night time temperatures between 60-65°F and 70-85°F during the day. However, Phalaenopsis are fairly tough in the sense that they can take temperatures in the mid 50's up to 95°F temperature. If the temperatures do get little high, one should increase the humidity, water and air circulation around the plant to compensate.
  • If possible, try to avoid temperature fluctuations, as this may cause closed buds to drop.
Water:
  • Phalaenopsis orchids do best when only watered when the potting media has almost completely dried out. Depending on the environmental conditions that could be as much as twice a week in the summer and as little as once a week during the winter months.
  • Ideally, Phalaenopsis should be watered early in the day to prevent moisture from setting on the plant overnight, as it could lead to root rot, crown rot and other diseases.
  • The best way to water Phalaenopsis is to remove them from their decorative pots and flush them with water for 1 to 2 minutes under a faucet. If that is not possible, you can also place 5 or so ice cubes on the bark once a week.
Humidity:
  • The ideal humidity conditions for Phalaenopsis is between 50% and 80% humidity. In warmer and drier conditions, Phalaenopsis can be placed on gravel that has water in the bottom to elevate the local humidity. However, you should never let the pots sit in water as this will cause root rot.
  • On days of high humidity make sure there is good air circulation around the plants.
Feeding:
  • In general, Phalaenopsis do best and are at their healthiest when fertilized on a regular basis. Once a month is ideal.
  • The growers recommend that you use a well balanced formulation such as 30-10-10 or a ratio that is similar. However, it is important that the plants are slightly moist before fertilizing to avoid burning.

Alocasia African Mask

The Everything Grows Interior Designer felt the Alocasia African Mask was the perfect compliment to this decor and made it a centerpiece in a modern chrome bowl.

Even though its common name is African Mask, this Alocasia along with other Alocasia varieties is from Southeast Asia.  Different varieties can grow quite large and be very dramatic.  They require very good light, warmth, and humidity to thrive so they can be temperamental indoors.

Note the plant to the left is the Sansevieria Zeylanica and the centerpiece above the couch is a plant wall in a shipping pallet.
