Permanent Botanical Poinsettias Stand Tall!

We all love the look of the Poinsettia plant. In the holiday season, these plants can be found everywhere in the US and elsewhere and are instantly recognized as a symbol of the season.

Whether by themselves or clustered together in groups, poinsettias add a little something extra to a holiday display.

Practically speaking, these lovely, evocative plants can be challenging to care for in an office or commercial environment and are fragile to handle in any situation.

When the situation merits it, Everything Grows uses permanent botanical poinsettias to accent our holiday decor. They are infinitely more durable, look great and are not subject to weather, mechanical damage or any of the other cruel fates that would surely destroy a live plant.

In the photograph accompanying this post you'll see 3 of these permanent botanical poinsettias on a tabletop lunch counter in a cafeteria. The area is used constantly throughout the day for food preparation which precludes using live plants.

We think you'll agree that these are an attractive option to live plants!

That Container Really Ties the Room Together

We LOVE containers!

One of the favorite shared activities of our interior landscape design staff is identifying the right containers for your space.

Sometimes our clients will already have a specification for containers from their interior designer. At that point, our focus becomes filling those containers with the plant material that best conveys the right look and feel for our client.

Our designers excel at putting together customized indoor plant designs of lush, tropical plants for our clients all over California and beyond.

Determining just the right container colors and shapes can be just as exciting as choosing the plant types that are appropriate to the available light and our clients' tastes.

Ready to start talking plants and containers? Awesome! We'd love to be a part of your design plans!

Everything Grows provide complimentary site visits and our indoor plant design service is likewise free! Contact us today to get started!

Modern Spaces, Modern Plants

Here at Everything Grows, our interior design staff customize every interiorscape to suit the decor, sensibilities and architectural feel of the client's space.

At this ultra-modern San Francisco firm, our designer chose arrangements, finishes and plants that add a minimalist's touch.

The orchids and succulent arrangements are a stylishly simple complement to the wood and concrete features and fixtures.

These matching Ficus Lyrata plants soften the squared edges and exposed concrete just enough to bring a sleek, understated contrast to the entry.

Random Acts of Flowers

Random Acts of Flowers recycles and repurposes flowers by engaging dedicated volunteer teams to deliver beautiful bouquets and moments of kindness to individuals in healthcare facilities across the country.

Everything Grows goes through a lot of Orchids and Bromeliads and when we have extras we donate them to the Random Acts of Flowers Silicon Valley location.  Flowers and plants do help heal, and being a Certified Green Company this is a great way to reuse something in a very helpful way.

Medical research has shown that patients with flowers or plants in their room have:
  •  Shorter hospital stays
  •  Lower ratings of pain, anxiety, and fatigue
  •  Lower systolic blood pressure
  •  More positive feelings

Here are some articles and research on the benefits of plants and flowers:

Sansevieria Moonlight

This variety of Sansevieria - the Sansevieria Moonlight - features a beautiful silhouette and a distinctive, silvery green coloration. The plant is hardy and tolerant of low light, is stingy with water and adds an architectural touch to an otherwise bare surface atop the file cabinets at this Northern California office.

We find that these plants retain their shape, size and coloration better than a like-sized Aglaonema in similar lighting conditions - and with much less leaf loss.

Indoor Plants Are Good for Your Health

Plants are able to help clean the air. They help to reduce pollutants such as ozone during the day. At night, thanks to photosynthesis, they convert carbon dioxide into oxygen. This process also increases the local humidity, forcing toxins and other airborne volatiles to settle so you don't have to breathe them the next day.

Plants also have the ability to change the levels of stress in an environment. In 1996, a study revealed the benefit of plants in the workplace to help control stress and increase productivity. Then in 2006, a rather remarkable study showed how plants in hospital rooms could actually help patients heal faster. Though the majority of reasons were psychological, the molecular contributions should not be ignored.

There may be another advantage to having plants in the room, though the benefit is not chemical, but microbial. In a study published last month, an international team of researchers unveiled the hidden microscopic benefits of having plants in the room. Based on their findings, plants contribute to a strong microbial diversity indoors and may help to keep the locker room effect at bay.

Orchids Evolve to Lure Pollinators

Orchids, like humans, use their lips to attract and entice others, and now new research finds that intense competition underlies their formation and constant changes.

Two competing groups of proteins are engaged in an evolutionary war that helps to explain why orchids are so beguiling and come in many different shapes and sizes, according to a new study published in the latest issue of the journal Nature Plants.

An orchid lip is important because "it acts as a landing pad or serves as a platform for potential pollinators, such as insects, moths and butterflies,"  Read the whole article here...

The "come hither" look of orchids, such as this member of the genus Phalaenopsis, ties with their attractive appearance.

Floating Flower Garden

This exhibit features 2,300 orchids suspended individually above the floor.  The orchids rise at your approach to form a tunnel of blossoms wherever you walk.

The artist, teamLab, used motion sensors to create the effect.

Lobby Comes to Life

This recent new indoor plant installation really helped brighten the lobby of this office building in Silicon Valley. In this interior landscape design, we chose plants with varied textures and colors in sizes that stood up to the substantial size of the lobby. A succulent bowl placed on the lobby table completes the design by tying in the large, free standing plants with the furniture.

Warm-Blooded Plants?!

"If you live in the Northeastern US, and you walk in the woods on spring mornings, you’re likely to see a skunk cabbage. Indeed, you might see a skunk cabbage growing while the snow is still on the ground. What you may not notice, unless you look closely, is that the snow around the skunk cabbage has melted. It’s not a spectacular sight, but around all of the skunk cabbages you see, there will be a small hole in the snow.

What’s happening here? Is the sun warming the darker plants and melting the snow? No. Actually, the phenomenon you’re seeing is called thermogenesis, and it’s a normal ability of the plant. Or to put it another way, the eastern skunk cabbage is warm-blooded. Its ability to generate heat enables it to grow and flower while the snow is still on the ground – even though the plant is not frost-resistant. The frost will never touch it."  Read more...

At Everything Grows, we work with indoor tropical plants that have to stay warm to live.  If our plants get anywhere near snow like the skunk cabbage pictured above, their fate would be much less photogenic.

Selecting the right plants for your office environment is our specialty. Contact us today for a complimentary site visit and design consultation.  Barring snow on the floors of your offices, we'll be able to come up with an interior landscape that will meet most every budget!

Oldest Known Flower Identified

A dinosaur-era freshwater plant from Spain has just been identified as the world’s oldest known flowering plant.

The plant Montsechia vidalii, described in the latest issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, has been dated to approximately 130 million years ago when dinosaurs were Earth’s dominant land animals.

The Cretaceous Period plant once grew abundantly in freshwater lakes in what are now mountainous regions in Spain. It slightly edges out another early flowering plant, China’s Archaefructus sinensis, as being the earliest known flower. Like Montsechia, Archaefructus was an aquatic species.

Phenomenal Phalaenopsis

We love orchids!

Orchids are a major focal point in our designs here at Everything Grows.  When placed appropriately, they set the tone of the interior landscape design.

A well-maintained, vibrant orchid is an instant, non-verbal statement that relays success, good taste, design savvy choices as well as a delicate display of beauty and elegance.

Orchids come in many varieties, shapes, sizes and colors.  We find that the Phalaenopsis, also called a 'Moth Orchid' for the shape of its blossoms, provides a great 'Wow' factor along with a blooming cycle that can last from 4 weeks to several months!

Everything Grows provides, maintains and rotates fresh orchids and lush, tropical foliage to hundreds of businesses throughout Northern California and all along the West Coast.  Contact us today for a complimentary design consultation and let us help you make your design vision a reality.
